Hello, my name is Laura. I’m a 3rd year PhD student studying the impacts of ocean acidification on phytoplankton physiology. I currently study at the University of Essex and have lived here in Colchester for a number of years now. Aside from science, I enjoy going on mini safaris in the wilds of Essex, drawing, travelling and consuming copious amounts of baked goods. I grew up in Canada, and as such say odd things like “sidewalk” and “parking lot”. I live with my boyfriend, who thinks it’s funny to make fun of my backwards English.
I have undertaken field work in a variety of places, including a coral reef research station in Indonesia, the Marine Biological Station in Millport, Scotland, the Arctic Circle and the Southern Ocean.
I can most often be found slumped over a microscope, counter in hand, muttering something about still being able to see cells even when my eyes are closed.
